Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix

PVGP Victory Lap at AVS 2013

Thursday Oct 24 the 2013 PVGP Executive Team, Volunteers, Patrons, Special Guests and heads of various PVGP sponsor organizations gathered at the Allegheny Valley School (AVS) in Coraopolis.  Agenda for the evening was simple: present the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and AVS the 31st annual PVGP contribution.  If only it were that simple.

Undoubtedly the PVGP events in July are awesome.  However they pale in comparison to the Victory Lap.  This is the understated yet Grand Finale of all things Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix.  Sure some of the ‘burgh’s Society Page who’s who were in attendance but the event has a grander purpose:  first hand witness of who, what, when, where, why and how the event exists and, more importantly, those helped through PVGP.

Early arrivals were treated to tours of the AVS campus seeing facilities and services provided.  Otherwise the festivities were kicked off at 7:15PM by AVS Bell Choir’s wonderful performance of America the Beautiful.  Brandon and Anita, 2013 PVGP Charity Ambassadors, helped PVGP Executive Director Dan DelBianco (emceeing) lead the Parade Lap recognizing all the volunteers and sponsors who generously donated pretty much everything including time, merchandise, services and funds for 2013.  Many ARPCA-ers were in attendance on behalf of our club and through their direct  sponsorship of PVGP.  The short list included:  Bud Osbourne, Ed Rice, Greg Farrell, Cliff Laschon, Marty Smith and Alan Smith among others.

For 2013 a new marque of the year record was established (throwing down the gauntlet?) with Mustang raising $75,200 juuuust edging out the ‘Marque of the Year’ all time high set in 2011.  Nicely done ‘stangers and congratulations on a fantastic acheivement!  Tantamount though is a new record contribution from PVGP to AVS and Autism Society of Pgh:   a 40% increase over LY with… $350,000!!!

2012 PVGP Recap

Well, another year, another great event.

Pitt Race Weekend

Racing on July 14th and 15th at Pitt Race were great. Porsche had a lot to cheer for. The Randy Beck, driving the Beck 904 was clearly the fastest car on track. Below shows just how dominate Porsche was at this year’s event.

Scheneley Park Weekend

The main weekend in Scheneley Park is always a focus event for ARPCA. This year we had over 120 cars register and we served lunches to almost 300 people. Rob and Missy Hoffman were running the Goodie Store and sold out of the great looking event shirts on Saturday. Judy Seiler was manning the P3 sales and we had a large number of P3 tee shirts sold to raise money for our P3 project (Porsche Project for Patriots) which raises money for the troops.

Again this year Louise Jeremiah coordinated all the details to make the event special while remaining low-key. Take a look through the pictures in the galleries below to see what happened (or what you missed if you were not able to attend.)

We once again had a great time with the BMW club who managed the catered lunch and the German car coral at the top of the hill above turn 12. This was a very good vantage point to see the races. We were also able to cheer on a number of our ARPCA members including Randy Evens run his 1982 Porsche 911 and Dottie Bechtol running her 914-6.

From the President

Fantastic is all I can say about our 2011 PVGP weekend as marque of the year and celebrating our 50th anniversary.

Over the weekend we had 502 Porsches in attendance (Saturday’s group plus the new cars on Sunday). According to our PCA representative – Tom Gorsuch (PCA Treasurer) this could be the largest display of Porsches ever for a single region.

For those of you who unfortunately couldn’t attend, we had Porsches from one end of the golf course to the other end. We had approximately 80+ 356’s thanks mostly to the efforts of Jolene Cicci.

We had cars from twelve states and Canada. There were Porsches from Connecticut, southern Florida and Colorado. We even had people come to our event from as far away as California.

With a scary beginning from a large thunderstorm early Saturday morning, it looked like our months of planning would be a disaster. We had Porsches everywhere; on the streets, parking areas, etc – everywhere except on the golf course. To make things worse all of Earl Seiler’s and his parking team’s Friday’s efforts were washed out by the storms. Once the gates to the park were opened; our club members met the challenge and were able to neatly park all of the 430+ Porsches on the golf course.

We had over forty volunteers assist us – many who volunteered at the park.

Suzanne Carlin sold over $6,000 in club and Porsche items, smashing her all time sales figure.

Our home theater raffle was a success and lucky Wade and Jane Anne Miller will soon have a very high end theater in their home.
We were honored to have representatives from Porsche Cars North America and PCA. I believe we overwhelmed them with our display. The Event Coordinator from PCNA that she was amazed at our efforts and couldn’t have done a better job herself – and that’s her job. We also had folks from both the Sewickley Car Store and Auto Palace with their displays.

Even with the soaring temperatures (especially on Saturday) and high humidity, most people stayed for the majority of the afternoons. I believe they just didn’t want to leave our venue with the record number of Porsches, racing in the streets and meeting new people from all over who had similar interests.

We have volumes of ARPCA people to thank and you’ll be hearing about them in future articles.

As of this writing, we do not have the final financial account obtained from our efforts. I will do so after we meet with PVGP. I couldn’t be more proud of our members with their work ethic and outstanding attitudes.

Home Theater Raffle Winner Selected

A winner has been selected

  • Yamaha Receiver
  • Yamaha Blu-ray DVD

Wade Miller, an ARPCA member and active participant in ARPCA DE’s was the lucky winner.

Thanks to all who purchased raffle tickets to support our fundraising efforts!

2011 PVGP Recap

Lining up Anniversary Cars

An Amazing 2 weeks – A Great Final Weekend!

We have just wrapped up two weeks of PVGP activities.

We concluded the the 2 weeks on Sunday with good friends, great racing, while raising money for charity. Some random facts to help appreciate the scale of the events:

  • Seventy Porsches were on display at the Hofbräuhaus
  • Over 430 Porsches were on the hill Saturday
  • 1000+ people where served lunch on Saturday by Tambellini’s Catering
  • 102 Porsches participated on the Sunday parade lap
  • Over 500 programs, dash plaques and poster were handed out

George Patterson & Russ Rose

The Kickoff Rallye

Major activities kicked off with the Rallye on Sunday July 10th. Russ Rose (a WXDX personality) and George Patterson (our very own ARPCA Region Vice President) took 1st in the Celebrity category / 2nd Porsche / 5th overall out of 94 entrants. Congratulations to George and Russ.

Hofbräuhaus

Hofbräuhaus Gathering on Thursday

People started to gather around 4:00 PM on Thursday. We ended up having over 70 cars come participate. The Hofbräuhaus set aside a big room for the ARPCA / PVGP crowd. A great time was had by all.

There was drama on Saturday in the Park

Saturday did start out “iffy.” As the ARPCA volunteers began to arrive to prepare for the large influx of Porsche attendees the heavens opened up. It rained hard. This was not the first rain of the weekend. Friday evening there was a strong rain as well. Just after Earl Seiler and his team just completed marking all of the parking areas with lines the rain started. Two weeks of preparations and a full day of work on the golf-course literally washed away. The combination of the Friday evening rains and the Saturday morning rain was enough that the golf course grounds keeper told the PVGP officials that no cars could enter or leave the golf course. If this decision continued there would be no car show.

Porsches as far as the eye can see

After 45 minutes the rain began to slow – then stop. Then the waiting began – Around 10:00 AM the decision was relayed from PVGP to ARPCA – we could move the cars onto the golf course but we would need to get them in place quickly. Cars continued to be placed until all available parking spots were full – well past lunch time. Thanks to John Luff for the great panoramic picture of the Porsches on the hill.

Marque Racing

The Marque racing was quite exciting. We had strong representation from our own region including Dottie Bechtol, Randy Evans and Mike Schindel all running strong. Take a look at the gallery of pictures below

General Activities

There were a lot of people and activities. Just look through some of the pictures.
