Ever wonder where the Porsche Crest came from?

The story of the Porsche Crest

As Germany underwent a revolution in 1918, a German state of Kingdom of Württemberg was transformed from a monarchy to a democratic republic and called Free People’s State of Württemberg. It’s capital was Stuttgart. In 1922 a new coat of arms was introduced that would later have its place in Porsche’s history.

Hand-made production of the Porsche badge

The word ‘Stuttgart’ is a development of the Old High German word ‘Stuotengarten’, where ‘stuoten’ means ‘stud’, referring to the breeding of horses. ‘Garten’ naturally translates as ‘garden’. The coat of arms of Stuttgart has had horses on it since 1286, but the current format was taken into use in 1938.

Consol Field Autocross Recap

A great time was had by all

That is how many posts end.  I think this is an appropriate way for how we have this post begin.  This was the most successful Autocross since the program was re-initiated by Rob Hoffman and Scott Mores.

The Consol Field in Washington County where the Washington Wild Things play is a great facility.  The setup team (Rob, Scott, and Trevor Hill) had the course set Friday evening.  At that point we had 25 registrants – the most that we’ve had attend.  We ended up having another 16 people register onsite.  Some were are Zone 4 brethren – coming out to run the final IRAC (Inter-Regional Autocross Champions) event.  Some were local Steel Cties-SCCA members who wanted to participate in “one last run” before putting the cars away until next year.

When I got up Saturday morning to get ready I walked into my bathroom to hear the rain dancing on the skylight.  I had looked at the weather report late Friday and it didn’t look too bad – 30% chance throughout most of the day.  I thought to myself, “maybe the rain this morning covers us for the rest of the day?!?”   For most of the day we were able to dodge the bullet.  Other than some misting mid-morning and 10 minutes of rain early afternoon we were spared real discomfort.

We had a number of women who decided to come out and give autocrossing a try.  Some of this is related to significant others’ trying to understand why cars and driving are so important to their guys….  In this camp included Melissa Hoffman, Rachel Hill and Kate Figliolia.  We also had Terri Mattock (our club Secretary and a frequent DE participant) give this a shot and one heck of an AX’er Kris Reid .  There were grins across the board.

AX Competition Results

The IRAC battle was fierce.   We had 18 Porsches running during the day.  There were 6.9 seconds between the fastest and slowest car and just 0.177 seconds between the IRAC winner, Mike Tersley (32.567) and Dale Rabeneck (32.744), who finished 2nd place.

We also had a field 0f 21 non-Porsches run.  Trevor Hill came in first (31.355) with Bob Charnrsky second (32.070) and Steve Zumoff third (32.476).  Note that the non-Porsche contestants ended up “spanking” the Porsche contingent.  A breakdown is below.

2012 Mid-Ohio DE Recap

All types of cars run.

A wonderful weekend

Well, the weather gods have again been favorable. Only on Friday afternoon did we have rain. There were a few of us who spent time on the track taking advantage of this “opportunity.” This was way better than last year’s lapping day which was a complete wash out (I have some great pictures of driving in the fog).

This is a Family Affair

I’m amazed at the number of families that participated at the Mid-Ohio DE. Here is a list of who I can remember:

  • Bryant, Lori & Robert
  • Cely, Michael & Rafael
  • Clark, Casey & Chris
  • Edwards, Tom & William
  • Elste, Richard & Scott
  • Fish, David & Larry
  • Giaimo, Fred and Nancy
  • Gilfert, Ted & Una
  • Graham, Bruce & Cathy
  • Holst, Chip & Craig
  • Laffey, Michael & Brendan
  • Pryor, Ken & Larry
  • Rabeneck, Dale & Craig
  • Schrenker, Alan & John

In my book this is quite a testament to the enthusiasm and commitment that our participants have. We have encouraged our family members to embrace our passion. I encouraged my cousin, Craig to come up and “experience” his first track day at Mid-Ohio in 2010. After running 2 additional times at other tracks he decided to again come back with us at Mid-Ohio. He even dragged his dad (my uncle) to the track for a second time for 2 days of big smiles all around.

These people have found the fun and excitement of track activities – come out and give it a try. You might be surprised at how fun (and addictive) this sport can be!

I hope to see you at a 2013 track or autocross event. Stay safe and warm until then.
