Whats New:

Mid April 2024

Greetings and Salutations,

Welcome to the start of allergy season for those of you that celebrate… I mean suffer.  You know what else has an adverse reaction to pollen?  Your car’s finish.  Apparently, dry pollen is more or less harmless, unless you attempt to wipe it away with a dry cloth. Dry pollen can act like an abrasive. So, much like the excessive use of facial tissues, wiping pollen away can abrade surfaces. Worse still, once it’s gotten wet, it becomes a caustic paste that can damage your car’s finish. Now, don’t panic. This is not an instant reaction but, left to sit, this paste can and will mar your finish.  What can you do to prevent this? Excellent question, while I was learning about this topic, I quickly discovered that apparently the only real way to protect against pollen is to have your car professionally cleaned.  Unsurprisingly, most of those opinions were provided by car detailing and cleaning companies.  The bottom line is that regular washing will protect your car from the ravages of “seasonal allergies.”

Below you’ll find events for April, May and into June.  There’s also an announcement regarding Der Terf, a new touring event, slated for late June and that’s nothing to sneeze at.  Was that an allergy joke? Yes, yes it was.

New Policy On Walk-In Attendance At ARPCA Events And Late Charge

We have evolved to a point where most of our functions now provide for advance registration and payment through the Club electronic registration portal, MSR. This has allowed for better planning of our events and for more accurate budgeting for food and Club swag. Nevertheless, we have seen on occasion members or their guests who have not registered in advance but who attend our functions. The Club may or may not recover the registration fee from those members, and this can cause shortage issues with food and swag. In an effort to further bolster our advance MSR registration process for Club functions, which also includes a registration cut-off date, the Club is now going to impose automatic late charges and event fees on any member (including for an unregistered guest) who attends an event without having first registered and paid. ARPCA reserves the right to automatically “Back-Charge” the member’s credit account via MSR to cover the member’s attendance and/or the attendance of the member’s guest. The member will be assessed the full registration fee for the event, PLUS an Administrative Late Fee equal to the lesser of $25 or 30% of the full event charge, per person.  These charges will be processed automatically through MSR, or in the case where the member does not maintain an active MSR account, then via personal check payable to ARPCA within 15 days after the event. Failure to pay may result in the member’s restriction to attend future ARPCA events. Any member who hereafter registers and/or attends Club events acknowledges that s/he understands and agrees to these charges and rules. If a member does not agree to these charges and rules, the member shall not register or attend any events.

The full Official Policy, adopted at our January 11, 2024 Board meeting, is set forth here.

Early April 2024

Greetings members of the ARPCA,

Porsche has announced an electric minivan to join the 2024 line-up with units available for delivery later this year.  Yes, you read that correctly.  From Jalopink.com, “The minivan’s cabin fits six people, and is completely unlike those of the company’s sports cars… The minivan’s cabin is what Porsche’s head of interior design, Markus Auerbach, calls an ‘area that invites relaxation, offering alternative seating positions for talking, working, and relaxing,’“ just what you’ve all been asking for, right?

APRIL FOOLS! Porsche did develop an EV Minivan and the link above goes to an actual 2021 article about it but, it is not coming to a dealership near you.  You’ll just have to resign yourselves to the standard offerings of high-performance coupes, sedans, and SUV’s.

But seriously, below you’ll find write-ups and links for upcoming events in April and May, 2024.  Additionally, please take note of the recently adopted policy regarding event attendance and late charges.

Our 718 Cayman S enjoying an early Spring Saturday at Southpointe in Canonsburg PA

Mid March 2024

Hello esteemed members of the ARPCA,

Beware the Ides of March!  Or you may end up with a salad named after you.  I jest.  The Caesar Salad is absolutely not named after Julius Caesar it’s reportedly named after Caesar Cardini, an Italian chef who owned a restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico, circa 1920’s.

If you fancy Caesar Salad or maybe just the company of some of your favorite ARPCA friends you will find some helpful information below. Admittedly, that is one of the weakest segue ways I have ever written, easily the cheesiest.  They can’t all be gems.  However, if you join the PTC in May the Iron Bridge does absolutely have a Caesar Salad on the menu.

Early March 2024

Greetings esteemed members of the ARPCA,

March is upon us. Fear not, I am not about to make a series of bad puns about the Ides of March.  I’ll save that for the mid-March newsletter which is only appropriate.

Instead, I wanted to revisit a newsletter topic from way back in March 2022, so long ago, simpler times.  March madness is upon us again.  For those of you about to engage in the practice of bracketology the NCAA has some dispiriting news.

If create your bracket by guess or random means like a coin flip your odds are 1 in 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 (9.2 sextillion.)

If you happen to know a little about college basket ball your odds in crease to 1 in 120,200,000,000. (120.2 billion)

To put the previous in perspective your odds of winning the Powerball are 1 in 292,200,000 or being struck by a meteorite in your lifetime is 1 in 840,000,000.  If you’re looking to gamble maybe stick to blackjack where the odd of being dealt 21 are approximately 1 in every 20 hands.

What’s not a gamble though? ARPCA Events are a sure bet! The High Performance Driver Education season has been set and registration is open.  The All Member dinner is fast approaching.  The Women of ARPCA have plans to socialize and to shop for a good cause.  The Porsche Touring Crew has an April event at an excellent local eatery.  See details below.

Best Regards,

Shawn Cressler – Web Support. Sharon Lunney – Newsletter Editor.

Mid February 2024

Hello,

Welcome to yet another pot hole season.  This annual period of  seesawing temperatures from sub-freezing to picnic weather in less than twenty-four hours has a deleterious impact on our highways, byways, driveways, and even sidewalks. But where else can you experience the novelty of all four seasons before dinner?  These relentless thermal variations pry loose chunks of precious driving surfaces and turn even the most solid concrete into gravel.  Save your shocks, guard your rims and keep your eyes on the road out there.

While you are gingerly navigating the moonscape of our local roads, we have a few destinations you might enjoy.  You can meet with new members at the Edgewood Country Club, relax with the Porsche Touring Crew at Angelo’s and for the Women of ARPCA, you can create custom cosmetics or gather at Sewickley Porsche for a meet and greet.  More details below.  If you attend any of the event’s, feel free to take and submit a picture or two or three at ARPCA.com.  The more of our members we can highlight on ARPCA.com, the better.

Best Regards,

Shawn Cressler – Web Support. Sharon Lunney – Newsletter Editor.

Mid January 2024

Esteemed Members of the ARPCA,

Winter has finally reared its ugly head.  Salt has been deployed which both melts snow and corrodes innocent metal components which haven’t done it any harm.  Here are a few recommendations for protecting your Porsche from salt.  This list is by no means exhaustive and if you have any tried-and-true tips you’d like to share we would welcome your wisdom and share them in due course.

Wax and seal your vehicle, I don’t know this is much of an issue as many of you keep your cars polished to a high sheen. Unsurprisingly, the manufacturer of ceramic coating indicates that it provides the best protection, however, other sources recommend a synthetic wax which will also do an excellent job.

Keep your tires clean.  They can pick up grit, sand and salt and inadvertently fling it against your undercarriage.

Wash your car to clean off salt.  Several sources recommend washing at least once a week during road salt season. Make sure these washes include your car’s undercarriage.  At least one source indicated that some automatic car washes recycle their water and may inadvertently be using water contaminated with salt and should be avoided.

Avoid puddles which is something of a no brainer as puddles often form in potholes which are not known for being great for performance suspensions.  In this case the puddles are basically salt concentrators – little cauldrons of corrosion best given a wide berth if possible.

If possible, avoid driving immediately before or after a snow storm.  This will help minimize your vehicle’s contact with free road salt.  I understand the reasoning behind, this but it’s often hard to avoid driving before, during, or after snow.  After all, we need to get our milk, eggs, and bread before the weather hits, right?

I hope this was helpful and if not helpful, I hope it was diverting.  If it was neither, well, the good news is there’s a new feature “Meet Our Members,” and plenty of other items you’ll find engaging below.

Meet The Flickingers!

We are starting a new monthly feature “A few questions and answers with an ARPCA member” which we hope you will enjoy.  Please feel free to volunteer or participate so we can feature you in a future issue of e-Rundschau. If you are interested in participating, please email Sharon at tulip16057@gmail.com

Here are our first members who volunteered (via John Rattenni) to answer our random list of questions.  It is our pleasure to introduce you to some favorite members you probably met at a track event:

Mike and Kate Flickinger:

1. What was the make and model of your first car?
First car we bought, MK7 Volkswagen GTI

2. Tell us your life story in exactly one sentence.
We met junior year of college, one of our first dates was spent detailing our cars, the rest is history.

3.What is your dream Porsche car?  What color?
Porsche 964 reimagined by Singer in Irish Green though Katie would probably want a custom Robin’s Egg Blue.

4. If your life was a song, what song would it be and why?
Fast Cars and Freedom by Rascal Flatts

5. You’re buying a Porsche, are you looking for an automatic/PDK or manual transmission?
PDK for a daily driver, manual for a sports car.

6.What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
Mike dislikes washing the cars. Katie has a green thumb and keeps a small garden growing flowers, tomatoes, herbs, and vegetables.

7. What is your favorite movie or television car?
Aston Martin DB5 as first seen in Goldfinger.

8. You’re taking your Porsche on a road trip, where is your ideal destination?
Our Porsche is primarily a track car, so any track. VIR currently tops the list of tracks we’d like to visit within a reasonable drive.

9. What celebrity or famous person would you like to take with you on that road trip and why?
Since we’re going to a track, a race car driver would make sense. Katie would probably choose Sebastian Vettel, and Mike would be too happy with the destination to protest.

10. What is your motto in life?
The first time Mike met Katie’s Grandma Honey, he was driving her home from Thanksgiving dinner and was driving…spiritedly if you will. He apologized to her and said he would slow down. She immediately giggled and said “the faster the better!” And we couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

Porsche Touring Crew 2023 Charity Donation

ARPCA and the Porsche Touring Crew has made a contribution of $1,310.20 to Anchorpoint Counseling Ministry.

This is the charity that was selected for 2023 by PTC.  They help individuals, couples, and families of all age groups.  Their counseling includes issues such as depression, marriage relationships, abuse, addictions, and many more areas of need in the northern area of Allegheny County.  Thank you all PTC members who made voluntary contributions at the lunches in 2023.  PTC will continue in 2024 to have lunch gatherings and will offer members a chance to support a charity.

The 2024 charity will be Tunnel2Towers.
