ARPCA Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix 2020 – Cancelled

Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix Shifting Gears
Canceling Race Week while Featuring Smaller Driving Events

Excerpts from the – Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix Association:

After consulting with our committees, sponsors and city officials the PVGP has decided to cancel its July 17-26, 2020 Race Week.

Most major automotive events throughout the summer have already been canceled due to COVID-19. The PVGP waited as long as possible before making a decision, hoping the situation in Pennsylvania would improve. This is a difficult decision, but I am encouraged by the patience and enthusiasm of our volunteers.

PVGP 2020 – Parade Laps

2020 Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix – by Ed Rice

Sorry folks – I cannot do it. I simply cannot have a summer go by without having some sort of Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix activity! I know this year’s event was effectively cancelled due to the Corona virus, but there are still some things we can do to celebrate what is our Club’s single biggest social and charitable event each year.

On Sunday, July 26th, we would have been parking on the lawn for Day 2 of the PVGP at Schenley Park. This year, that day is going to be a quiet, uneventful Sunday morning.  Many will go to services or enjoy breakfast out on the back deck and listen to the birds.

I on the other hand, plan to drive down to Schenley Park, and do an informal “parade lap” or two around the road course. Read more

Autocross school is for all levels of driving.  During the morning school, drivers will learn about and experience vehicle dynamics through a series of exercises: braking, turning, accelerating, understanding the course, and driver development.  The school has been developed as much for the novice as for those who want to improve their existing skills.  Instructors will be prepared to teach everyone from first-time students to seasoned, veteran drivers.  All students who sign up for the autocross school will be automatically registered for the afternoon autocross.

Saturday June 17th – 8:30AM – 4:30PM – Tire Rack Street Survival Car Control Clinic

  • ARPCA proudly presents the 2017 Tire Rack Street Survival program in Pittsburgh!
  • Primary emphasis of Tire Rack Street Survival® is a “hands-on” driving experience in real-world situations! We use your own car to teach you about handling limits and how you can control them. Students will become more observant of traffic situation they find themselves in. They will learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves. They will understand why they should always wear their own seatbelts, and why they should insist that their passengers wear seatbelts, too.
  • It’s about more than driving – it’s about LIVING!  Thanks to support of Tire Rack, Michelin, Enterprise, BWM CCA Foundation, Pitt Ohio Express and Moon Township Ford we offer this event at a very low cost of $75.00. Space limited.

  • Use GATE E – (PVGP Schenley Park Map here) Say hello and thank Eugene Williams and Mark Sheldon at entrance gate to German Hill.
  • ARPCA volunteers in Red T-shirts w/ colorful pool noodles will direct you to a parking spot – please follow their lead as we will be VERY tight with parking this year due to high registration count.
  • After parking, walk to registration table/tent for your packet.
  • Registration Packets – along w/ commemorative program, agenda, lunch wristbands, dash placard, door prize ticket (Sunday ONLY), and concours ballot are two thank you goodies per MSR car registration.
  • Catered lunch – Begins Noon-ish.  Wristbands (Yellow Sat – Orange Sun) are included in your registration packet.  Shortly after lunch will be door prizes, raffle prizes, Concours Winners, etc.

CONCOURS

Brian Strohmeier is again running his wildly popular “People’s Choice Concours”.  Everyone registered for Saturday is entered and gets a vote!  Your ballot (pale blue 3×4″ piece of paper) is inside registration packet.  Find your 5 favorite Porsches on green and put their Car # on ballot.  Turn all ballots in to registration table by 12 NOON.  Brian is quoted as saying last night “envelopes full of cash are welcomed… and highly encouraged!”

RAFFLES

To help raise additional charity $, Len Richards and Maureen McClure are again running the raffle table w/ goodies from generous club sponsors.  Swing by w/ a donation receiving an arms length of tickets for chances to win VERY cool stuff like: Paradigm Theatre Surround Sound Speakers, Porsche Experience Center Gift Certificates, Porsche Design Knives, Joplin 356 Framed Photo, Photographic Canvas Art, Signed & Framed PVPG Print from Porsche’s 2011 Marque of Year, Watkins Glen Cheeze-It NASCAR Race Tickets, ARPCA Driver’s Ed Event, ARPCA AutoCross Event and MANY more!   Items have been generously donated by club sponsors (in no particular order): Goosebumps, Porsche Cars North America, FastCompanyFraming, Matthew Little Photography, Almart, Sobek Secret Art, 2016Found.com ARPCA and a few more I’m probably remiss not mentioning right now.  Let’s support them as they do us!

LINDA BARNICOTT PAINTING

Famed Pittsburgh Artist Linda Barnicott will be on site Saturday (maybe Sunday too) at the registration tent. Rumor has it she’ll have with her the finished original Commemorative ARPCA PVGP 2016 Painting. Come take a look at her outstanding craftsmanship and support her helping the ARPCA / PVGP charities.

Phew – that’s a lot…  Sunday is repeat of above, just no concours but there is a door prize raffle for those pre-registered (ticket in your registration packet).

One final note:

*** WEATHER – WEATHER – WEATHER ***

As promised, weather is shaping up to be spectacular: Sat: 83F – Mostly Sunny and Sun: 87F – Full Sun! Because it’s a golf course, temps will feel about +10F warmer!  So, prepare to stay hydrated and don’t forget your shades, sunscreen, walking shoes, hat and a lawn chair to enjoy and cheer on the contingency of ARPCAers racing this weekend!

In the highly unlikely event there are any weather ‘events’ delaying our party or entrance to golf course, we will post updates if needed at TOP OF EACH HOUR (with time stamp) STARTING 6AM Sat & Sun on ARPCA’s website: www.arpca.com.  EMAILS WILL NOT be sent – Check web for latest info.

As always, we appreciate your support and patience of this PVGP Charity Event staffed entirely by volunteers!

See you at the races!

~ Ed Rice, ARPCA PVGP Chair
