Consol Field Autocross Recap

A great time was had by all

That is how many posts end.  I think this is an appropriate way for how we have this post begin.  This was the most successful Autocross since the program was re-initiated by Rob Hoffman and Scott Mores.

The Consol Field in Washington County where the Washington Wild Things play is a great facility.  The setup team (Rob, Scott, and Trevor Hill) had the course set Friday evening.  At that point we had 25 registrants – the most that we’ve had attend.  We ended up having another 16 people register onsite.  Some were are Zone 4 brethren – coming out to run the final IRAC (Inter-Regional Autocross Champions) event.  Some were local Steel Cties-SCCA members who wanted to participate in “one last run” before putting the cars away until next year.

When I got up Saturday morning to get ready I walked into my bathroom to hear the rain dancing on the skylight.  I had looked at the weather report late Friday and it didn’t look too bad – 30% chance throughout most of the day.  I thought to myself, “maybe the rain this morning covers us for the rest of the day?!?”   For most of the day we were able to dodge the bullet.  Other than some misting mid-morning and 10 minutes of rain early afternoon we were spared real discomfort.

We had a number of women who decided to come out and give autocrossing a try.  Some of this is related to significant others’ trying to understand why cars and driving are so important to their guys….  In this camp included Melissa Hoffman, Rachel Hill and Kate Figliolia.  We also had Terri Mattock (our club Secretary and a frequent DE participant) give this a shot and one heck of an AX’er Kris Reid .  There were grins across the board.

AX Competition Results

The IRAC battle was fierce.   We had 18 Porsches running during the day.  There were 6.9 seconds between the fastest and slowest car and just 0.177 seconds between the IRAC winner, Mike Tersley (32.567) and Dale Rabeneck (32.744), who finished 2nd place.

We also had a field 0f 21 non-Porsches run.  Trevor Hill came in first (31.355) with Bob Charnrsky second (32.070) and Steve Zumoff third (32.476).  Note that the non-Porsche contestants ended up “spanking” the Porsche contingent.  A breakdown is below.

Autocross at Consol Field

Last autocross of the 2012 season

The final Autocross of the season is Saturday, October 20 at Consol Field in Washington, PA.

AX has been a huge hit within our club this year. If you haven’t yet attended an AX you’ve got one more chance for 2012. We’ve seen Porsches and non-Porsches compete. AX is a great way to test and develop your skill as a driver in a very safe and controlled environment.

Register by clicking: here or by visiting arpca.motorsportreg.com

Consol Field has a fantastic area to set up and hold an Autocross. The space allows for a course of fast straights and offers plenty of room for twists, turns and slaloms.  We’re also excited that this event will be an IRAC (Inter Regional Autocross) event.  This means that participants from our sister regions in Ohio will come to AX with our region. We’re looking for a strong participation from the ARPCA as well as MORPCA, NOR and OVR. The event promises to be a great way to end of 2012 Autocross season.

Onsite registration starts around 7:00 AM, drivers meeting at 8:00, the track walk around 8:20 and the first runs beginning around 8:45 AM. We should be wrapped up with the 2nd set of runs around 3:00 PM.

Join us at the end-of-season Party!

After the event you’re invited to join us a Jumper’s Junction We’ll mosey on over around 4:00 PM. The Address is: 2111 North Franklin Dr.Washington, PA 15301 and is located next to Consol Field. You are welcome to stay for dinner and drinks as our end of season IRAC / Track social. Mix and mingle with AX’ers and fellow PCA members from sister regions and display your car in the lot. You can visit Jumpers Junction website here.

Greensburg Jeannette AX / Sushi and Speed Recap

Setting up the AX at sunrise

This year it was really more like “Speed and Sushi.” With the second AX of the 2012 season taking place at the Greensburg/Jeannette Airport and a social at Roboyko, August 11 was a Porsche filled day.

Although, a bit windy, overcast, and chilly at the airport, we had a 23 participants overall and many spectators. The “Speed” part of the day started about 2 hours earlier than a typical autocross does, so that we had plenty of time to meet with our non-racing friends at Roboyko. Registration opened at 7 a.m. and the AX at the airport was underway a little after 8.

Each driver ran 2 sessions with 4 runs in each. The course included slaloms, sweeps, gates, and a twist at the end that made the course very challenging. Trevor Hill took several participants on an “instructional ride” to get more acquainted with the course at speed.

Trevor won the day with the best times overall, followed by Dale Rabeneck in second, and Scott Mores in third. After the event and a few fun runs we made our way to Roboyko for the “Sushi” part of the event.

Roboyko’s lot was full of P-Cars, when the AX’ers arrived. It was a great site to see.  Many of the new faces from the autocross attended and mixed with the crowd. Overall there were more than 20 cars in the lot and as usual the food was great, the beer was cold, and the crowd was friends.

No better way to spend a Saturday…

Take a look at the photos from the event.

In case you’ve ever wondered what it looks like from the drivers seat Autocrosser Robbie Carroll was kind enough to share a video of one of his runs at the airport.
