Pitt Race DE

ARPCA Drivers Education Series

Come run with us to BeaveRun!

Get ready for the ARPCA Pitt Race DE Event on August 25 & 26

The ARPCA Region would like to invite you join us at Pitt Race (formerly known as BeaveRun) for another great weekend of Track Activities. This facility just 20 minutes north of Pittsburgh International Airport is a welcome addition to the Western Pennsylvanian region.

With its North Track, a 1.6 mile course and the Vehicle Dynamics Area (VDA), 5+ acres of pavement for auto-crossing and car control BeaveRun caters to new drivers as well as seasoned professionals.

Our event will utilize both facilities. For newer students you will not only be running on the North Track as part of your standard run group activities you will also have classes on the VDA to refine car handling skills. These include Slalom and Stop, Avoidance and Skidpad exercises.

All types of vehicles are welcome!

In addition to Porsches, we have Audis, BMWs, Corvettes, Lotuses, Mazdas, Minis, Subarus (just to name a few) come and participate. All that is required is that you have valid state inspection and a safety inspection completed by your local mechanic.

Come for a party

In addition on on-track activities the club will also be having a social gathering at the track Saturday Evening. Have your family come up to enjoy good food and drink with friends.

First time on Track?

First time? No worries. Our club excels in making sure your experience is safe and enjoyable. You will be paired with an instructor who will be knowledgeable in driving your type of car at speed. Your day will begin with a drivers meeting, move to classroom instruction and then out onto the track. We run rain or shine – many drivers find that running in the rain is just as enjoyable – the major difference is everything just happens at lower speeds. You will also need a SNELL 2005-rated helmet. All of this will be covered in the detailed student information packet that we’ll provide before the event.

2012 Car Control Clinic

Getting Ready for the Slalom Exercise

Scheduled for May 26th at Pittsburgh International Race Complex (PIRC, formerly known as BeaveRun, and only 27 minutes from Cranberry) the annual ARPCA Car Control Clinic is the PERFECT opportunity to learn more about you and your car in a very safe environment. We will be using the SIX-ACRE Vehicle Dynamic Area (VDA) at PIRC to provide a complete educational experience! The Car Control Clinic is hands-on, in-car training that consists of a classroom discussion of vehicle dynamics and human dynamics followed by four hours of in-car instruction in accident avoidance and defensive driving maneuvers.

The Clinic can teach students what typical driving schools can’t: what to do when something goes wrong in the car – and provide the opportunity to practice these maneuvers in a safe environment.

Drivers will use the VDA to learn and practice three key skills:

  1. Smooth steering on a Slalom course – Understand how to navigate your car smoothly through a set of cones. Recognize where you want your car to go. You will learn how to drive where the cones aren’t!
  2. Threshold Braking – Learn how to control your car in an emergency breaking situation. You will understand more about your car’s capabilities and how to manage them. Learn how to successfully maneuver around obstacles (just as if you have a deer in the headlights) while slowing your car.
  3. Skid-Pad Activities – Drive on a skid pad where you will have the opportunity to experience your car breaking traction and then learn how to regain traction in a safe environment. Feel the balance and learn how to steer your car with the throttle.

Running on the Skidpad

All types of vehicles are welcome! Bring your special vehicle or your daily driver. In addition to Porsches, we have Audis, BMWs, Mazdas, Minis, Subarus as well as mini-vans participate. All that is required is that you have valid state inspection.

A bit Nervous? No worries. Our club excels in making sure your experience is safe and enjoyable. You will be paired with an experienced instructor who will be knowledgeable in driving your type of car.

This is a great opportunity for new drivers!

Read about the tracks:

Watkins Glen (May 11-13)

As you probably know, Watkins Glen International (nicknamed “The Glen”) is an auto race track located near Watkins Glen, New York, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake. Long known around the world as the home of the United States Grand Prix, which it hosted for 20 consecutive years (1961–1980), The Glen has been home to road racing of nearly every class for over 50 years, including Formula One, the World Sportscar Championship, Can-Am, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and the IndyCar Series.

We run the 3.4 miles Grand Prix configuration which is enjoyed by both new as well as experienced drivers. On Friday we will host a lapping day for instructors and very advanced students. The DE will run Saturday and Sunday.

Our spousal auxiliary will be arranging activities for those who are not interested in being at the track.

Nelson Ledges Road Course (June 15-17)

In June we are combining forces with the NORPCA region to run at Nelson Ledges in Garrettsville, OH. This will be a two day DE. On Friday there will be a “944fest” for which people who are into running their 944’s on track can participate.

Nelson Ledges is a two-mile, seven turn road course, with a rich history of sports car and motorcycle road racing. It is a user-friendly facility that is well suited to a variety of racing and motor sports related activities. In years past, the Longest Day of Nelson, a 24-hour race was run with “Showroom Stock” through racing prototypes. Come run with us and capture some of this spirit.

Cancelled – Summit Point Circuit (July 5&6) – Cancelled

Come join us at Summit Point and create a mini-holiday July 4th for you and your family in this historic region. Our spousal auxiliary will be arranging activities for those who are not interested in being at the track.

We will be running on the Summit Point Circuit (SPC). SPC a 10-turn, 2.0-mile (3.2 km) road course that features a 2,900-foot (880 m) main straight. This original circuit opened in 1970. The Main Circuit was repaved in the Fall of 2007.
