2012 Driver Education Events

Running at Watkins Glen

Run with us at some of America’s greatest tracks!

The 2012 season is here. Come and begin to experience what performance driving is all about. We’ll be managing 4 drivers education events on some North America’s most beautiful tracks. Events are Saturday & Sunday with a invitation only “lapping day” on Friday for instructors and highly experienced students.

We are returning to 3 favorites: Watkins Glen, Pittsburgh International Race Complex (previously known as BeaveRun), and Mid-Ohio.

[Cancelled – We’re disappointed to announce that we’ve needed to cancel our new new venue for 2012 – Summit Point Circuit (SPC.)]

We will also joining forces with NORPCA to run at Nelson Ledges. As a result, in 2012 we will have a DE every summer month (May – September.) This along with a few Autocrosses and a Car Control Clinic thrown in will keep us very busy!

Read about the tracks:

Watkins Glen (May 11-13)

As you probably know, Watkins Glen International (nicknamed “The Glen”) is an auto race track located near Watkins Glen, New York, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake. Long known around the world as the home of the United States Grand Prix, which it hosted for 20 consecutive years (1961–1980), The Glen has been home to road racing of nearly every class for over 50 years, including Formula One, the World Sportscar Championship, Can-Am, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and the IndyCar Series.

We run the 3.4 miles Grand Prix configuration which is enjoyed by both new as well as experienced drivers. On Friday we will host a lapping day for instructors and very advanced students. The DE will run Saturday and Sunday.

Our spousal auxiliary will be arranging activities for those who are not interested in being at the track.

Nelson Ledges Road Course (June 15-17)

In June we are combining forces with the NORPCA region to run at Nelson Ledges in Garrettsville, OH. This will be a two day DE. On Friday there will be a “944fest” for which people who are into running their 944’s on track can participate.

Nelson Ledges is a two-mile, seven turn road course, with a rich history of sports car and motorcycle road racing. It is a user-friendly facility that is well suited to a variety of racing and motor sports related activities. In years past, the Longest Day of Nelson, a 24-hour race was run with “Showroom Stock” through racing prototypes. Come run with us and capture some of this spirit.

Cancelled – Summit Point Circuit (July 5&6) – Cancelled

Come join us at Summit Point and create a mini-holiday July 4th for you and your family in this historic region. Our spousal auxiliary will be arranging activities for those who are not interested in being at the track.

We will be running on the Summit Point Circuit (SPC). SPC a 10-turn, 2.0-mile (3.2 km) road course that features a 2,900-foot (880 m) main straight. This original circuit opened in 1970. The Main Circuit was repaved in the Fall of 2007.

PittRace (Aug 25-26)

Pittsburgh International Race Complex (PittRace- formerly known as BeaveRun) is a relatively new facility just 20 minutes north of Pittsburgh International Airport and is a welcome addition to the Western Pennsylvanian region. With it’s North Track, a 1.4 mile course and the Vehicle Dynamics Area (VDA), 5+ acres of pavement for auto-crossing and car control PIRC caters to new drivers as well as seasoned professionals.

This event is perfect for first time participants! For all “newer” DE divers we structure the event to include a combination DE and Car Control Clinic. In addition to time on the main track we include specialized, in-car instruction with specific activities on the Skid Pad, Slalom Course and Threshold Braking Course on the VDA.

Mid-Ohio (Sept 14-16)

The Mid-Ohio road course is one of the great auto racing facilities and is nestled in the rolling hills of Lexington, OH. This 2.4 mile technical road course is enjoyed by both new as well as experienced drivers.

Put this on your calendar now! Mid-Ohio is beautiful mid-September. On Friday we will host a lapping day for instructors and very advanced students. The DE will run Saturday and Sunday.

Our spousal auxiliary will be arranging activities for those who are not interested in being at the track.

All types of vehicles are welcome!

In addition to Porsches, we have Audis, BMWs, Corvettes, Lotuses, Mazdas, Minis, Subarus (just to name a few) come and participate. All that is required is that you have valid state inspection and a safety inspection completed by your local mechanic.

First time on Track?

First time? No worries. Our club excels in making sure your experience is safe and enjoyable. You will be paired with an instructor who will be knowledgeable in driving your type of car at speed. Your day will begin with a drivers meeting, move to classroom instruction and then out onto the track. We run rain or shine – many drivers find that running in the rain is just as enjoyable – the major difference is everything just happens at lower speeds. You will also need a SNELL 2005-rated helmet. All of this will be covered in the detailed student information packet that we’ll provide before the event.
